Investigations are commonly required to aid in diagnosis, management and assessment of response of various conditions. Investigations may also be required to gauge a patient’s fitness for anaesthesia and surgery.

Broadly speaking investigations are classified as being non-invasive or invasive.

Non-invasive investigations include blood tests, urine tests, and the majority of X rays and scans.

Invasive tests typically include endoscopic investigations (gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy) as well as certain X ray procedures (e.g. angiograms and X ray guided drainage procedures).
